Tyson Fury's Weight Gain Sparks Concern Ahead Of Title Fight

Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has drawn attention for his noticeable weight gain just weeks before his scheduled title defense. Photos circulating on social media this week show the 6'9" fighter looking significantly heavier than during his last bout in late 2025.

Fury, 37, is set to face mandatory challenger Martin Bakole on May 18 in Las Vegas. Boxing analysts estimate the undefeated champion may have added 20-30 pounds since his last official weigh-in. The weight fluctuation comes after Fury took an extended break following his controversial split-decision win over Oleksandr Usyk.

Promoter Bob Arum told ESPN on Tuesday that Fury remains "in full training camp" despite the visible changes. "The Gypsy King has always had weight fluctuations," Arum said. "He'll be ready when the bell rings."

Fans have expressed mixed reactions on social media platforms. Some worry the extra weight could slow Fury down against the powerful Bakole, while others recall his 2018 comeback when he shed over 100 pounds after battling depression.

Nutritionist Dr. Mike Roussell, who has worked with UFC fighters, warned that rapid weight changes can affect endurance. "Carrying extra pounds requires more oxygen during movement," he told Boxing Scene. "That becomes critical in championship rounds."

Fury hasn't publicly addressed the weight concerns. His Instagram posts this week show him training at his Morecambe, England gym, though followers noted his workouts appear less intense than previous camps. The WBC has confirmed no changes to the scheduled bout at T-Mobile Arena.

Sportsbooks have adjusted odds slightly, with Fury now a -250 favorite (down from -300 last month). The fight will air live on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S. at 7 p.m. ET on May 18. Fury's team says he plans to begin his official weight cut in early May.
