Stanford Star Lauren Betts Transfers To UCLA After Breakout Season

Stanford women's basketball standout Lauren Betts announced her transfer to UCLA on Monday, marking one of the most high-profile moves in college basketball this offseason. The 6-foot-7 center, who was the nation's top recruit in 2022, will join the Bruins after two seasons with the Cardinal.

Betts' decision comes after a breakout sophomore year where she averaged 9.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game off the bench. Her transfer is trending today as fans react to the Pac-12 shakeup ahead of UCLA's move to the Big Ten conference next season.

The Colorado native explained her choice in a social media post, citing UCLA's "winning culture" and proximity to family. Betts will be immediately eligible to play for coach Cori Close's squad, bolstering a Bruins team that reached the Sweet 16 last season.

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer wished Betts well in a statement, calling her "a tremendous talent." The transfer comes during a period of significant roster changes for Stanford, who lost three other players to the transfer portal this offseason.

Betts' move highlights the growing impact of the transfer portal in women's college basketball. Analysts predict her presence could make UCLA a preseason top-10 team when the 2026-27 season tips off this fall.
