StubHub Settles FTC Charges Over Hidden Fees

StubHub has agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it deceived consumers with hidden fees. The settlement, announced today, resolves allegations that the ticket resale platform failed to disclose extra charges upfront during checkout.

The FTC found StubHub violated consumer protection laws by advertising tickets at one price but adding substantial fees later in the purchasing process. These hidden fees sometimes increased the total cost by over 30% of the advertised price.

Under the settlement terms, StubHub must clearly display the full ticket price including all mandatory fees from the initial search results. The company must also provide refunds to certain customers affected by the deceptive practices between 2016 and 2023.

This case comes as the Biden administration cracks down on junk fees across multiple industries. The FTC has recently targeted similar practices in the live event, hotel, and banking sectors.

StubHub said in a statement it has already implemented changes to provide clearer pricing. The company maintains it settled to avoid prolonged litigation while denying any wrongdoing.

Consumer advocates praised the settlement as a win for transparency. The case highlights growing scrutiny of drip pricing tactics that mislead shoppers about true costs.

The settlement requires court approval and could affect millions of ticket buyers. It marks one of the largest penalties ever imposed for hidden fee violations in the ticketing industry.
