Costco Faces Lawsuit Over Automatic Membership Renewal Charges

Costco is facing a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging the retailer automatically renewed memberships without proper consent and charged customers without warning. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington state on April 11, claims Costco violated consumer protection laws by failing to clearly disclose its auto-renewal policy.

The case has gained national attention as millions of Costco members report unexpected charges on their credit cards. Plaintiffs argue the warehouse giant made it difficult to opt out of automatic renewals while prominently displaying discounted first-year membership rates.

Court documents show the lawsuit seeks refunds for affected customers and changes to Costco's renewal practices. The company has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. Similar cases against subscription services have resulted in multimillion-dollar settlements in recent years.

Consumer advocates say the case highlights growing frustration with automatic renewal policies across industries. Many states have passed laws requiring clearer disclosures, but enforcement remains inconsistent. The lawsuit could pressure retailers to make cancellation processes more transparent.

Costco currently has over 120 million members worldwide. The company reported $242 billion in revenue last year, with membership fees accounting for nearly $4.6 billion. The case is expected to proceed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
