Tesla Model 3 Prices Drop Again As EV Competition Heats Up

Tesla has slashed Model 3 prices for the third time this year, dropping the base model to $36,990 before incentives. The move comes as legacy automakers like Ford and Hyundai gain ground in the affordable EV market.

Industry analysts say Tesla's aggressive pricing reflects growing pressure to maintain dominance. The company's US market share fell to 55% in Q1 2026 from 65% a year earlier, according to Cox Automotive data.

The latest cuts make the Model 3 $2,500 cheaper than January's price and $7,000 below its 2025 starting point. Buyers in states with EV incentives can now get the car for under $30,000 after tax credits.

Dealers report increased showroom traffic since the price change went live Tuesday morning. However, some existing owners expressed frustration about rapid depreciation on social media platforms.

Tesla's move follows similar reductions in China and Europe earlier this month. The company faces particular pressure in the US from Ford's Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai's Ioniq 6, both offering competitive range at similar price points.

The price war comes as EV adoption accelerates nationwide. US electric vehicle sales crossed 1.5 million units in 2025, representing 12% of all new car purchases according to the Department of Energy.

Tesla will report Q1 earnings next week, where analysts expect the company to address how price cuts are affecting profit margins. The stock (TSLA) dipped 2.3% in premarket trading following the announcement.
