Costco Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Membership Auto-Renewals
Costco Wholesale Corporation is facing a class action lawsuit alleging the company failed to properly notify customers about automatic membership renewals. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court on April 10, 2026, claims Costco violated state consumer protection laws by not providing clear and timely notices before charging members for auto-renewals.
The plaintiffs argue that Costco's practices misled customers, many of whom were unaware their memberships would automatically renew at higher rates. According to the complaint, the company allegedly sent renewal notices too close to the renewal date, leaving members little time to cancel.
This lawsuit comes as Costco continues to expand its membership base, with over 70 million members in the U.S. alone. The company reported record revenues in 2025, driven in part by membership fees, which totaled over $4 billion.
Consumer advocacy groups have praised the lawsuit, calling it a necessary step to hold corporations accountable for transparent billing practices. "Consumers deserve clear communication about their financial commitments," said Jane Doe, spokesperson for the National Consumer League.
Costco has yet to publicly comment on the lawsuit. The case is expected to draw significant attention as it progresses, potentially impacting millions of members across the country.
