Walt Disney World Announces Major Expansion Amid Rising Attendance

Walt Disney World revealed plans for its largest expansion in over a decade on Thursday, responding to record-breaking attendance at the Florida resort. The $2 billion project will include new themed lands, hotels, and transportation upgrades across all four parks.

The announcement comes as Disney World experiences unprecedented post-pandemic demand, with 2025 marking its highest annual attendance since 2019. Company executives cited a 22% increase in international visitors last quarter as a key factor driving expansion plans.

New construction will begin this summer with a completion target of late 2028. The project includes a "Fantasia"-inspired land at Magic Kingdom, a Brazil pavilion for Epcot's World Showcase, and a reimagined Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge experience at Hollywood Studios.

Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro stated the expansion will create approximately 5,000 new jobs in Central Florida. The news follows recent union negotiations that resulted in higher wages for existing cast members.

Local officials welcomed the economic boost but raised concerns about infrastructure strain. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings noted the region must address transportation and housing challenges to support continued tourism growth.
