Virginia Beach Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, 5 Injured At Oceanfront

A shooting near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront left three people dead and five injured late Saturday night, marking the city's worst gun violence incident in years. Police confirmed the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m. near 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue, a popular nightlife area crowded with spring break visitors.

Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said officers responded within minutes to reports of gunfire, finding multiple victims at the scene. Two suspects fled on foot and remain at large as of Sunday morning. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups.

Among the deceased is a 22-year-old local college student, identified by family as Jamal Carter. The other victims have not yet been named pending family notifications. Three of the wounded are in critical condition at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Mayor Bobby Dyer called the violence "a gut punch to our community" during a Sunday press conference. The shooting occurred just blocks from where a 2019 municipal center attack killed 12 people, renewing debates about public safety measures.

Tourists and residents expressed shock at the violence in the typically family-friendly resort area. "We heard pops and thought it was fireworks until people started screaming," said witness Alicia Torres, who was dining nearby. The Oceanfront district saw increased police patrols Sunday as businesses remained open.

The shooting is trending nationally as it follows a string of high-profile gun violence incidents across the U.S. this spring. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin tweeted that state law enforcement is assisting with the manhunt and victim support efforts.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. The FBI has joined the investigation, though officials stress there is no ongoing threat to the general public.
