UConn Coach Suspended After Headbutt Incident During Game
University of Connecticut men's basketball coach Dan Hurley has been suspended indefinitely following a heated altercation during Tuesday night's game against Villanova. The incident occurred in the final minutes of the game, when Hurley appeared to headbutt an opposing player during a sideline dispute.
The confrontation unfolded after Villanova guard Justin Moore collided with UConn guard Tristen Newton near the Huskies' bench. Hurley, known for his fiery demeanor, rushed onto the court and appeared to make contact with Moore. Video footage shows Hurley leaning forward aggressively, with his forehead making contact with Moore's shoulder.
The referees immediately ejected Hurley from the game, and UConn went on to lose 78-72. The Big East Conference announced Wednesday morning that Hurley would be suspended pending further investigation. UConn's athletic department released a statement calling the incident "unacceptable" and pledging to cooperate fully with the league's review.
Hurley apologized publicly Wednesday afternoon, saying, "I let my emotions get the best of me, and that's on me. I take full responsibility for my actions and will accept whatever consequences come my way." Villanova coach Kyle Neptune declined to comment on the incident, but Moore told reporters he was "shocked" by Hurley's behavior.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many fans criticizing Hurley's actions while others defended his passion for the game. UConn President Radenka Maric released a statement Wednesday evening, saying the university "does not condone any form of unsportsmanlike conduct" and will take appropriate disciplinary action.
This is not the first time Hurley has been involved in a sideline altercation. In 2023, he was fined $10,000 for a heated exchange with a referee during a game against Georgetown. The latest incident comes at a critical time for UConn, which is fighting for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Assistant coach Kimani Young will serve as interim head coach during Hurley's suspension. UConn's next game is scheduled for Saturday against Providence. The Big East Conference is expected to announce its final decision on Hurley's suspension by Friday afternoon.
