Roddy Gayle Jr. Leads Ohio State To Big Ten Tournament Victory

Ohio State guard Roddy Gayle Jr. delivered a career-high 28 points Sunday night, propelling the Buckeyes to a thrilling 78-75 win over Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament championship. The sophomore’s clutch performance, including a game-winning three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left, has sparked national buzz as March Madness approaches.

The victory secured Ohio State’s first Big Ten title since 2018 and cemented Gayle as one of college basketball’s rising stars. Social media erupted with highlights of his decisive shot, pushing his name to the top of Google Trends in the U.S. on Monday morning.

Gayle, a former four-star recruit from Niagara Falls, New York, had been averaging 12.3 points per game this season before his breakout performance. His emergence comes at a critical time for the Buckeyes, who enter the NCAA Tournament as a projected No. 4 seed.

Purdue’s All-American center Zach Edey dominated with 32 points and 14 rebounds, but Gayle’s perimeter shooting proved unstoppable. Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann called it "the best individual performance I’ve seen in a championship game."

The win caps a remarkable turnaround for Ohio State, which finished just 8-12 in conference play last season. Tournament MVP honors went to Gayle, who also contributed 5 assists and 3 steals in the championship game at Chicago’s United Center.

With Selection Sunday just days away, analysts now speculate whether Gayle’s heroics could improve Ohio State’s seeding. The Buckeyes will learn their NCAA Tournament destination during the March 13 selection show on CBS.
