Masters 2026 Prize Money Hits Record $20 Million Amid Golf Boom

The Masters Tournament announced today its 2026 purse will reach $20 million, marking the highest prize pool in golf major history. The 15% increase from 2025 reflects golf's surging popularity following the PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger and rising broadcast revenues.

Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed the record payout during Tuesday's press conference, noting the winner will take home $3.6 million. This comes as ticket resale prices for this year's tournament (April 9-12) peaked at $12,000 for Sunday's final round.

The prize money spike follows LIV Golf's disruptive influence on player compensation and the sport's growing US audience. Nielsen data shows 2025's Masters final round drew 16.2 million viewers, the most since Tiger Woods' 2019 victory.

Top-ranked players like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy praised the increased purse while acknowledging fan concerns about commercialization. "It reflects golf's growth, but we can't lose what makes the Masters special," McIlroy told ESPN.

The announcement trended nationwide as recreational golfers debate whether elite payouts help or hurt the sport. Equipment manufacturers report a 22% year-over-year sales increase, suggesting broader economic impacts.

Augusta National also revealed plans to donate $5 million from tournament proceeds to local charities. The 2026 Masters will be held April 2-5 with ticket applications opening this June.
