Coachella Main Stage Collapses During High Winds, Performances Canceled

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival faced a major disruption Saturday when high winds caused the main stage to partially collapse. The incident occurred just before headliner Lana Del Rey's scheduled performance, forcing organizers to cancel the remainder of the night's shows.

Strong desert winds exceeding 50 mph tore through the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California around 8:30 PM local time. Festival staff evacuated the area as scaffolding and equipment came crashing down. No serious injuries were reported, though three crew members were treated for minor scrapes.

This marks the first major structural failure in Coachella's 25-year history. The festival's second weekend, scheduled to begin April 17, remains on track as crews work to rebuild the stage. Organizers announced Sunday morning that all Saturday ticket holders will receive full refunds.

Social media erupted with videos showing the chaotic scene as winds whipped through the venue. Attendee Mark Torres told CNN: "It happened so fast - one minute we were waiting for the show, the next they were screaming at everyone to run."

The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for the area earlier Saturday. Some fans criticized organizers for not postponing events sooner, while others praised the quick evacuation response.

Coachella's main stage has hosted legendary performances from Beyoncé, Prince, and Paul McCartney in previous years. This weekend's lineup included Doja Cat, Tyler, The Creator, and No Doubt's highly anticipated reunion.

California officials confirmed they will investigate whether proper safety protocols were followed. The incident comes as major festivals face increased scrutiny over crowd control and infrastructure following tragedies like the 2021 Astroworld disaster.

Weekend two ticket holders are advised to monitor Coachella's social media for updates. Meteorologists predict calmer conditions for next weekend's events, though desert wind patterns remain unpredictable in April.
